The Goldilocks tier — not too small, not too big, just right for most personal libraries.
Hobbit is the most popular ElfHosted Personal Media Stack tier — the sweet spot between Starter’s contended hardware and Ranger’s larger capacity. Same configurable stack (media player, automation, storage provider — all your choice), on semi-dedicated hardware with double Starter’s stream capacity. 4xHD or 2x4K concurrent streams.
The Goldilocks tier — not too small, not too big, just right for most personal libraries.
What is Hobbit?
Hobbit is the most popular ElfHosted Personal Media Stack tier — the sweet spot between Starter's contended hardware and Ranger's larger capacity. Same configurable stack (media player, automation, storage provider — all your choice), on semi-dedicated hardware with double Starter's stream capacity. 4xHD or 2x4K concurrent streams.
Hobbit moves you from contended to semi-dedicated hardware — same setup-free experience as Starter, but with a fixed slice of CPU and RAM reserved for your stack. Library scans don't stall, transcodes don't fight for resources, and 4K plays without stutter.
Configure your stack at checkout: pick your media player, automation tooling, and cloud storage provider from the variation dropdowns above. Each combination provisions a tailored bundle.
How Hobbit Configures
Hobbit is a variable-subscription bundle. Pick one option from each of the three variation dropdowns and ElfHosted provisions the matching stack:
- 🎬 Media Player: Plex, Emby, or Jellyfin — all available, switch any time.
- 🛠️ Media Automation: Radarr / Sonarr (the classic *arr-stack workflow), Seerrbridge (a streamlined alternative), or "Other" if you'd rather configure your own.
- ☁️ Cloud Storage Provider: RealDebrid (BYO subscription), TorBox (BYO), NzbDAV (with a bundled Usenet/NNTP account included), or "Other" to bring something else.
- 📺 4xHD or 2x4K concurrent streams on semi-dedicated hardware, regardless of variation choices.
- 💾 No storage limits: your library lives in your debrid account or comes through your chosen Usenet path — you're never paying us for terabytes.
Hobbit vs other tiers
Hobbit is the sweet spot for most personal libraries — semi-dedicated hardware with enough headroom for family streaming.
Why Run Your Media Stack on ElfHosted?
Self-hosting a media server plus automation tools plus a debrid or Usenet integration plus reverse proxy plus authentication plus monitoring is the kind of project that's fun for two weeks and a maintenance burden for the next three years.
- No Docker compose to maintain, no rclone mounts to debug, no NGINX configs to remember.
- No "automation can't reach indexer" or "library scan stalled" troubleshooting at 11pm.
- Updates handled automatically across whichever combination you picked — media server, automation, storage provider.
- No storage cap to outgrow — your library lives in your debrid account or comes through your Usenet provider, not our disks.
- PlexPass / Emby Premiere (if your variation needs one) and your debrid subscription stay yours; everything else lives with us.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which combination should I pick?
Defaults: Plex + Radarr/Sonarr + RealDebrid suits most users. Pick Jellyfin if you want to skip PlexPass; pick NzbDAV if you'd rather use Usenet (a Usenet account is bundled with that variation); pick Seerrbridge if you want a simpler automation workflow than the full *arr stack.
Does Hobbit include a debrid subscription?
Only the NzbDAV variation includes anything bundled (a Usenet/NNTP account). RealDebrid and TorBox variations are BYO — bring your own subscription.
Can I switch variations later?
Yes — switching the media player, automation, or storage provider is supported but requires reprovisioning that part of the stack. Contact support to coordinate.
Do I need a Plex or Emby subscription on top?
Depends on your media player choice:
- Plex: remote streaming requires a PlexPass or Remote Play Pass — that's a Plex requirement, not ElfHosted's.
- Emby: remote streaming requires an Emby Premiere subscription — also Emby's requirement, not ours.
- Jellyfin: no extra subscription. Fully free and open-source for remote streaming, hardware transcoding, the lot.
Where does my library live?
Wherever your chosen Cloud Storage Provider keeps it. ElfHosted runs the apps and metadata; the actual media is held by your debrid (RealDebrid / TorBox) or Usenet (NzbDAV) provider. We don't sell terabytes.
What does "Semi-dedicated" hardware mean?
Semi-dedicated means a fixed slice of CPU and RAM is reserved for your stack — no contention with other users. Plenty of headroom for library scans and simultaneous transcodes.
Hobbit is the most popular Personal Media Stack tier. Semi-dedicated hardware, your choice of media player, automation tooling, and cloud storage provider — all preconfigured and wired together.

I’d call myself a tinkerer by nature — I’ve already got a system humming away out of my garage, and I know my way around all the bits and pieces it takes to make streaming work. And yet, despite having the know-how to “do it myself,” Hobbit has become my main driver.
Why? Two big reasons: the community and the service quality.
The community here is unlike anything I’ve seen elsewhere. It’s not just about tech support (though that’s rock-solid) — it’s the sense that you’re part of a group of people who genuinely want everyone’s setup to thrive. When you run into a snag, or even just want to optimize something, there’s always someone who’s been there and has a clever solution. That level of shared knowledge is priceless.
And then there’s the service itself. The quality speaks for itself — streams are fast, reliable, and consistently excellent. I’ve tested enough setups over the years to know how rare it is to find something that “just works” day in and day out without endless tinkering. With Hobbit, I don’t need to worry — I just press play and enjoy.
For me, that balance is what makes Hobbit stand out: it’s perfect whether you’re hands-on like me or someone who just wants plug-and-play simplicity. Having the ability to do it myself but still choosing Hobbit as my go-to says a lot. It’s not just about functionality — it’s about trust, community, and reliability.
If you’re on the fence, take it from a lifelong tinkerer: Hobbit is worth every cent.
Fantastic community support with genuine knowledge sharing Rock-solid, reliable streaming quality Great balance of plug-and-play simplicity + advanced tinkering options Transparent, trustworthy team behind it Saves me time and hassle compared to managing everything solo
Occasional learning curve if you dive into the more advanced features You’ll get spoiled — once you’re used to this quality, everything else feels subpar

You get your moneys worth and then some.
No headache over storage limitations, buffering or updating stacks. Well thought out patching times for all data centers.
Can be a little tricky to setup first time but there are great guides available and of cource ElfFriends over on discord.
Would have been nice if Bazarr was included for the ultimate bundle but its quite easy to get foreign subtitles on your own as well via Plex or Emby.
Low management, automation, good price overall, fantastic community support, daily updates for datacenters
No bazarr, small learning curve
